Rosemont BallPark

Project Details: A new franchise in the 12-team American Association of Independent Professional Baseball is coming to the Village of Rosemont in May 2018. To house the new team, a 6,300-seat baseball stadium and adjacent 1,200-space parking deck is being constructed on approximately 10.3 acres, just west of Interstate 294. To meet Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago’s (MWRD) requirements, a stormwater infiltration and detention system was installed underneath the parking deck.

Challenge: The primary challenge was to find space for the stormwater management system as the entire acreage was designed to be paved or used for the stadium and parking deck. Another obstacle was meeting the amount of stormwater detention required for the project as well as complying with the VCBMP requirement.

Solution: To solve the primary challenge, a DoubleTrap system was installed on a stone foundation underneath the parking deck in three separate basins to maximize the system’s capacity for total water stored. This also allowed the total acreage to be used for the development as opposed to sacrificing valuable land area for stormwater management. To fulfill the VCBMP requirement, StormTrap provided precast voids into the bottom base of the DoubleTrap, allowing the volume control capacity to slowly discharge back into the soil which will recharge groundwater and provide quality advantages.

Open communication and responsive teamwork were essential components in reaching an effective solution. Mackie Consultants Senior Project Manager Trudy Buehler explains, “We had to make numerous revisions to the plans after the first StormTrap system was designed and StormTrap worked with us to make the necessary modifications along the way.” Due to the necessary structural integrity and amount of detention required, pipe was not a viable option to meet the stormwater management needs, and StormTrap was specified for this project.
