A large underground detention system was installed in just 11 days, providing a large stormwater storage capacity as a part of the Jane Byrne Interchange project to provide flood mitigation.

Challenge

The project required a high-capacity underground detention system adjacent to a busy highway, with a solution that maximized stormwater storage with construction minimizing disruptions to traffic.

Solution

The 14′-0″ DoubleTrap detention system was installed using more than 275 precast units in just 11 days, providing 213,458 cubic feet of underground stormwater storage. The system delivers the capacity needed to support IDOT’s long-term stormwater management goals while allowing for a fast and efficient installation.
