Zaxby’s

Project Details

Zaxby’s is a quick-service restaurant chain largely owned and operated through franchising. The chain has more than nine hundred locations with the majority located in the Southern United States.

A 2,200-square-foot Zaxby’s restaurant and drive-thru was being developed in Valdosta, Georgia. The project also included construction of a parking lot, utility installation, landscaping, and stormwater management. Given the compact 0.96-acre site, there was insufficient space to implement a traditional stormwater pond. As a result, the project required an alternative solution: underground stormwater management.

A shallow basin was required to accommodate the invert elevation of an existing junction box in the City of Valdosta’s stormwater conveyance system, which served as the discharge point for the system. Due to flexible system heights and the ability to achieve storage volume requirements in a minimal footprint, StormTrap was chosen to provide the solution. A thirty-one-piece detention and infiltration system was designed using 3’-3” SingleTrap concrete modular pieces. Additionally, a StormSettler was specified to meet the City’s water quality requirements and effectively remove sediments, debris, floatables, and hydrocarbons.

The StormSettler functions as a stand-alone device downstream of the underground detention system. Chad Scarbor, P.E., Contractor with Scarbor Land Planning & Construction, explains how “The StormTrap system detains the water, which allows for settlement of some TSS. Then the runoff is directed to the StormSettler for further treatment before entering the city’s storm system.”

In addition to its effective water treatment capabilities, the StormTrap system provided substantial cost savings during installation. Its modular, compact design greatly reduced the need for expensive washed stone. Additional savings were achieved by installing the basin with an excavator as opposed to a crane and operator, noted Gary Arthur, PE, with Carter Engineering Consultants.

Arthur also commented on the support provided by StormTrap, stating “We received excellent design assistance and onsite installation support.”

Scarbor mentioned the overall experience, adding, “The team pushed hard and met a demanding deadline. From the purchase to delivery and installation, the process has been wonderful.”
