Cardinal Elementary School – Arlington, VA | Stormwater Detention System

Black background with thin white geometric lines forming abstract cube shapes in the lower right corner.

Northern Virginia has experienced excessive rainfall due to the intensity and increase of storms. As part of the city’s initiative to build a flood-resilient Arlington, StormTrap provided the stormwater solution for Cardinal Elementary School. A two-basin detention system was constructed using 12’-6” and 13’-6” DoubleTrap concrete modular pieces. See the timelapse video highlighting the installation of the vault, which was placed underneath the school’s sports field. The system provides just over 4 million gallons of stormwater. The drainage area for the vaults is 222 acres.

StormTrap partnered with Arlington Public Schools, Arlington County Government, Bowman Consulting, William B. Hopke, Co., and Gilbane Building Company, who played an instrumental role in the success of this project.
